Three spore-pollen zones have distinguished based on the palynological study of the Peat beds in the continental shelf of the East China Sea. The first zone is that of Abies-Picea-Pinus-Artemisia-Cyperaceae obtained from the lower bed, reflecting the cold and wet climate. At that time the sea level was lowed and the continental shelf of the East China Sea was exposed as the plain where kinds of herbaceous plants lived, the vegetation of the mountain region in the continental margin was coniferous forest mainly consisted of Abies, Picea and Pinus. The second zone is that of Pinus-Quercus-Cupressaceae-Artemisia-Cyper-aceae obtained from the middle marine bed, the climate geting warm, the sea level rising again,the continental shelf of the East China Sea being submerged, the vegetation of which was coniferous and broad-leaf mixed forest mainly consisted of Pinus and Quercus. The third zone is that of Cupressaceal-pinus-Artemisia-Cyperaceae obtained from the upper peat bed,the paleoclimate and paleogeography of which is close to that of first zone except the climate being dry and vegetation of the continental margin being coniferous forest mainly consisted of Thuja orientalis and Pinus tabulaeformis. The age of the peat beds is considered as the late Pleistocene and the lower peat bed is related with the first subglacial age of wurm,the upper peat bed is related with the second subglacial age of wtirm and the middle marine bed is related with the interglacial age of wtirm.
